Greenhouse gases trap heat in the earth’s atmosphere by allowing visible light from the sun to pass through the earth’s atmosphere while absorbing the resulting infra-red radiation emitted by the earth.

The three main greenhouse gases are carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.
